As tropical regions confront climate change and other environmental challenges, seaweed aquaculture is a promising option for sustainable economic development and food security for coastal communities. Seaweed farming is not only one of our lowest-impact forms of food and raw material production—requiring almost essentially no land, freshwater, or greenhouse gas emissions to grow—but when farmed responsibly, it can also improve water quality, provide wildlife habitat, and reduce carbon emissions through replacement products.
To realize the social and environmental benefits of seaweed aquaculture, it’s important that the industry is developed with the right practices and in the right places. A free online course from The Nature Conservancy provides a foundation for growers, policymakers, industry groups, supply chain actors, conservationists, and other stakeholders to support the smart growth seaweed aquaculture in tropical areas. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including the basics of seaweed farming, environmental risks and benefits, better management practices, and community planning and engagement.
